Cambodia becomes world’s second largest producer of raw cashew nuts
Cambodia has become the world's second-largest producer of raw cashew nuts, with 830,000 tonnes produced in the first seven months of 2024, according to the Cashew Nut Association of Cambodia (CAC). Exports to Vietnam have surged to over 780,000 tonnes, valued at $1.092 billion, reflecting increases of 36.7% in volume and 28.1% in value.
Uon Silot, President of CAC, attributed this growth to crop adaptation to El Niño and a slight increase in cultivation area. Ivory Coast remains the largest producer, while Cambodia has surpassed India, which now ranks third due to climate issues.
Silot highlighted the potential for attracting foreign investment in local processing, supporting the National Cashew Policy 2022-2027. Dried cashew nuts currently cost around 7,300 riel per kilogram, and the industry needs about $329 million in additional investment for infrastructure. Recently, Agricultural and Rural Development Bank CEO Kao Thach urged farmers to join CAC for improved production and market access, with plans for three modern farming communities in Kampong Thom province.
